Artistic director Jennifer Dallas met dancer and choreographer Bienvenue Bazié in Lagos, Nigeria, at Trufesta 2009 International Dance Festival. While teaching and performing at Trufesta, they discovered a strong continuity in each other’s artistic practices and sensibilities. Directly following Trufesta, Dallas traveled to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso to work with Bazié and investigate the possibility of future collaborations. In February 2011 Converse was born by way of a two week residency in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

 

Following the success of Converse the two now come together for the creation of a larger work for the DanceWorks 2014 main stage. The journey will begin in Toronto and Ottawa this spring, continue in Ouagadougou in the fall and finally return to Toronto in the spring of 2014.

 

Jennifer Dallas, directrice artistique de Kẹmi a recontré ce danseur et chorégraphe à Lagos, au Nigeria, au festival de dance Trufeasta 2009. Durant leurs activités d’enseignement à Trufesta, ils ont découvert une forte connection dans leur pratique et leur sensibilité artistique respectives. Aprés Truefesta, a voyagé elle s’est rendue à Ouagadougou, au Burkina Faso pour travailler avec Bazié et examiner la possibilité de futures collaborations. Ansi, grâce à une résidence de deux semaines à Ouagadougou, Converse a vu le jour en février 2011

 

Après le succès de Converse ils ont commencé les démarches pour la création d’une grande œuvre pour DanceWorks 2014. Un aventure qui débutera à Toronto et à Ottawa ce printemps et qui se rendra à Ouagadougou à l’automne pour enfin revenir à Toronto au printemps 2014.
